Job description

Wanted: Commercial Manager

Anticipated start date: October 2024

Closing Date: 9 September, 2024

Salary Band: £35k-£40k

Full Time, Sheffield, UK

Do you want to utilise your skills to make a real-world impact working at the forefront of biotechnology? Do you love science, but yearn for a more people-facing role? Are you fascinated about the development and commercialization of cutting edge biotechnology into real world products that can directly help real people?

We are looking for a driven and enthusiastic commercial manager to play a key role in growing our commercial functions: marketing, sales and customer management. You will work across our biology and engineering teams to stay at the coal face of our product development, and work directly with the company founders to build out our commercial team. Ultimately, this work will help us fulfill our ambition to be one of the largest biotech companies in the world (we think, and go for big).

You likely work, or have worked, in life sciences R&D and realized you wanted to transition out of a technical role. You are a self-starter with a deep understanding of cellular biology and the problems that our clients face on a daily basis. You thrive balancing multiple parallel projects with tight deadlines while operating with high degrees of autonomy, and are comfortable applying your previous experience to new applications (e.g. learning how to do technical marketing, customer acquisition, etc.).

WE VALUE

  • Curious, creative and driven do-ers who want to create real value and impact.
  • Friendly, organised, efficient and enthusiastic people with a can-do attitude.
  • Collaborative and communicative people who thrive as part of a tight-knit but diverse team.
  • People from all backgrounds and walks of life who want to play an active role in creating a company, and a future, we are all proud to be a part of.

WE DON’T VALUE

  • The status quo. If you are looking for a highly structured, 9-5 environment, this is not the role for you.
  • Fixed mindsets. We expect everyone who joins us to have the ambition and desire to continuously improve their skills to become world class in their chosen field.
  • A lack of self-reflection - we can only help you grow if you are honest with yourself and others about what areas you want to improve in are.
  • People who are afraid to ask for help - there are no such things as dumb questions.
  • Ego’s - we act, and win, as a cohesive team where everyone at every level engages and supports everyone else, and everyone’s voice is heard.

THE ROLE

The primary function of this role is - rather unsurprisingly - to help grow our sales, and ultimately the commercial side of our business. We are a fast growing startup which means your day to day will be constantly changing.

You must be comfortable operating with a degree of uncertainty and upskilling to meet new challenges. Your work will be exciting and the learning opportunities significant. Expect to expand your skill set more in a year than many do in five years.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain oversight over all marketing and sales projects (from generating application notes to ensuring regular touchpoints with clients in our sales pipeline).
  • Liase with our technical teams to generate relevant and useful technical marketing materials, and lead on coordinating our marketing efforts (social media, email, guerilla marketing, etc.)
  • Engage in regular lead generation and prospecting to keep the top of our sales pipeline healthy.
  • Maintain our CRM and helping to identify and grow customer relationships.
  • Act as a coordinator and point of contact on selected client projects.
  • Build, refine and continuously optimize our sales & marketing processes to create a well oiled commercial machine.

NEED TO HAVE

  • Demonstrated interest in the commercialisation of biotechnology products.
  • Ability to think analytically from first principles to rapidly understand new problems.
  • Be able to ‘put yourself in a customer's shoes’ to understand our clients’ pains and the value created by our solutions.
  • Excellent time management, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • A disposition for self-driven learning and a desire to continuously create and improve our commercial processes.
  • Willingness to travel (domestically and internationally) to visit clients and attend industry conferences & events as needed.
  • Understanding of how to actually solve - not just describe - problems to generate immediate, actionable results. If you are coming from a large orginisation, or an MBA/consulting background, this will be a significant change of pace.

We will consider applicants from any/all relevant background(s), but you are likely to have an advanced degree (Masters/PhD) in the life sciences and have several years of professional, non-academic, experience.

NICE TO HAVE

  • Experience culturing a variety of different cell types (e.g. cell lines, primary cells, pluripotent stem cells) and performing cell biology research.
  • Previous experience working in a commercially focused cell biology research laboratory and/or orginisation.
  • Prior experience using mammalian cell culture bioreactors or cell culture automation systems for process development and/or cell manufacturing.
  • Previous experience working in a startup/scaleup environment.
  • Prior work in a life science technical sales or marketing position.

BENEFITS

  • Join a fast-moving transformative industry in a high-growth environment.
  • Opportunity to work on a variety of projects across the company and to rapidly learn new skills.
  • We seek to empower, not restrict, and give ownership and significant input into key decisions.
  • Our networks are your networks. We will do everything to empower and promote the people who work with us.
  • You will be based in the UK's greenest city on the doorstep of the peak district with world-class hiking, biking, running, and climbing 15 minutes from our custom-built, independently owned R&D centre.
