Job description

Wanted: Scientist I - Tissue Culture & Cell Biology

Anticipated start date: As soon as possible

Closing Date: 13th January, 2025

Salary Band: £27.5k-£32.5k

Full Time, Sheffield, UK

Do you want to utilise your skills to make a real-world impact working at the forefront of biotechnology? Do you love science and live for efficient experimental design and analysis? Are you excited to leverage biology to solve some of humanity’s biggest challenges, like curing cancer, developing regenerative medicines, and mitigating the adverse effects of animal agriculture?

We are seeking an energetic early career scientist to play an active role in supporting our cell biology team. You will work on all things tissue culture across our ongoing R&D projects, from creating and maintaining cell banks to conducting cell culture assays and biotesting our cell culture automation instruments. Ultimately, your work will help us fulfill our ambition to be one of the largest biotech companies in the world (we think and go for big).

You are a self-starter with a positive growth mindset who wants to grow technically and professionally in a rapidly changing environment. You have the ability and desire to operate with high degrees of autonomy and personal accountability and have a background in cellular biology.

WE VALUE

  • Curious, creative, and driven do-ers who want to create real value and impact.
  • Friendly, organised, efficient, and enthusiastic people with a can-do attitude.
  • Collaborative, curious, and communicative people who thrive as part of a tight-knit but diverse team.
  • People who strive to improve their skills continuously and become world-class in their field
  • Low-ego individuals who love asking questions and go above and beyond to help the team succeed.

THE ROLE

The primary function of this role is to support our biology team with tissue culture workflows to increase our pace of discovery and experimental iteration.

The startup journey is not for the faint of heart. You must be comfortable operating with uncertainty and upskilling to meet new challenges. Your work will be exciting, and the learning opportunities will be significant. Expect to expand your skill set more in a year than most of your peers will do in five years.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting R&D projects through your laboratory technical skills in culturing mammalian cells.
  • Rapidly learning and gaining proficiency in new techniques and workflows.

NEED TO HAVE

  • A can-do attitude and desire to join a high-performance organization.
  • Tissue culture experience with various cell types (e.g., cell lines, primary cells).
  • Experience using standard cell biology analytical techniques (DNA/RNA isolation, qPCR, imaging, etc).
  • Strong attention to detail, an openness to new ideas, and resilience when things go awry.
  • A desire to know why current processes are done the way they are and the ability to develop and test new operating procedures.
  • Interest in working with laboratory automation and bioproduction technologies.

We will consider applicants from any/all relevant background(s). However, you will likely have a bachelor's or master's degree in cellular/molecular/synthetic biology and prior experience working in tissue culture laboratories.

NICE TO HAVE

  • Previous experience expanding pluripotent stem cells (ES/iPSCs) and performing differentiation protocols.
  • Prior experience with flow cytometry.
  • Previous experience with suspension culture of mammalian cells
  • Knowledge and experience working directly or indirectly on R&D projects with hardware/software/material biocompatibility considerations.
  • Prior experience working with data analysis/computational tools (e.g., Excel, R, image processing, etc.).

BENEFITS

  • Join a fast-moving transformative industry in a high-growth environment.
  • Opportunity to work on projects across the company and rapidly learn new skills.
  • Daily interactions with our world-class technical team and one-on-one mentorship opportunities with the company founders.
  • You will be based in the UK's greenest city on the doorstep of the peak district with world-class hiking, biking, running, and climbing 15 minutes from our custom-built, independently owned R&D centre.
